A Request To Help a Previously Homeless Couple in Today’s Bitterly Cold Weather

    Posted December 10th, 2009 6:03 am

Update: Please Note: The washer and dryer mentioned below have now been acquired, and are not needed. I will be able to respond to donation offers and arrange to pick them up after work hours.

Yesterday a post here focused on the homeless in Louisville, and how great need and limited resources are causing families there to be turned away in the face of one of the coldest nights of the year in Kentucky.

Later that day, a neighboring worker in Frankfort passed along a list of needed items. That was when I learned that a couple in their fifties had been placed in transition housing. Prior to that, they had been homeless, spending their days at a picnic table outside the front door of the office where I work. The couple was moved into a government-supported duplex house, and no longer have to spend their days on the street and their nights at the Frankfort homeless shelter. These two people very possibly may have died during this bitter cold weather if it had not been for a wonderful combination of private and public resources (private and public resources contributed to the homeless center, and public resources underwriting the cost of their duplex). The weather forecast is for a low temperature tonight of 18 degrees.

I want to ask the readers here for help. This couple has nothing, and the attached list of needed items will help them make the transition away from life on the street. Items do not need to be new. If anyone would like to donate any of the items on this list, for the next four days, I will be glad to collect those donated items anywhere in central Kentucky and deliver them to the couple.

Here is the .pdf list of items they need.
I can be contacted by email at bob.layton@yahoo.com to make arrangements to pick up any donated items.

Please also share this with your friends in central Kentucky. As government resources disappear and the temperature drops, we can help make things work for these two people—and their dog.

The request for the cell phone is actually for a prepaid phone. The couple is applying for jobs, and wants a phone number to be able to be called if either of them are offered a job.

    Thank you.
