The following is a letter from Fayette County Democratic Party Chair Brenda McClanahan:

    Dear Fellow Democrat,

This is not a request for money. This is not a request for a vote. This is a request for you to stand up for people who are being kicked while they are down!
We invite you to join us in protesting Senator Jim Bunning’s hold on HR 4691. Senator Bunning refused to allow the Senate to consider a bill to extend unemployment benefits to 1.2 million Americans – and causing many families, some with family members in the middle of treatment for cancer, heart disease, and chronic illnesses, to lose their health insurance.

Federal reimbursements to states for highway programs will also be halted. These reimbursements amount to about $190 million a day, according to the House Transportation Committee. Because of Senator Bunning, 2,000 federal Transportation workers were furloughed today without pay. The domino effect will be felt throughout the country. It will be another body blow to an economy struggling to recover from the worst economic meltdown in two generations!

As Governor Beshear has written to Senator Bunning, “…These unemployed Kentuckians come from hard-working families that have struggled for months to find new employment in the greatest economic recession in our lifetime. They are mothers and fathers who are trying to put food on the table for their children and seniors who are trying to pay the rent….”

We hope you’ll respond to Senator Bunning in either or both of two ways:
Join the protest initiated by Lt. Gov. Mongiardo at Bunning’s Lexington Headquarters tomorrow afternoon, March 2 at 3:00 pm, 771 Corporate Drive, Suite 105 (that’s near the intersection of New Circle and Harrodsburg Road).

And, sign the petition to be sent to Bunning on Jack Conway’s website at www.jackconway.org. The link is on the right side of the home page under a picture of Senator Bunning.

If you can’t get to the Senator’s office tomorrow, please take a minute when you read this message to sign the petition.

Headlines all over the country are proclaiming that a “Senator from Kentucky” has singlehandedly blocked benefits to more than a million Americans. Let Senator Bunning know that he has disgraced Kentucky and let Americans down!

    Sincerely,

    Brenda McClanahan, Chair
    Fayette County Democratic Party
