    6th Congressional Race Updates

Republican Andy Barr received endorsements from four former Republican state legislators, to go along with his endorsements from “luminaries” such as John Roach and Ralph Hacker. His February 25 press release also talks about having raised $300,000, so apparently he has not added much to his fundraising totals from earlier.

No word on whether Andy Barr has formally been endorsed by Jeff Fugate, but Barr did attend the hate-filled fundamentalist rally in Frankfort last month, and got a shout-out from Mr. Fugate.

Meanwhile, Rand Paul is doing his damndest to fritter away his huge lead in the polls, by breaking his word and backing out of a scheduled debate in Louisville, previously scheduled and promoted by the Metropolitan Republican Women’s Club.

While Paul doesn’t have time to a face-to-face debate with his opponents, he is willing to appear at the Lexington offices of incumbent Democratic 6th District Congressman Ben Chandler, at what he is calling a “Take Back the House” rally. Presumably Paul will be joined by the six dwarfs running against Chandler in the Republican primary, and look for reappearances of the Bunning rally ground troops like these folks:

Karl, Medusa and a Blonde Bunning/Rand Paul Fan

Finally, retired coal executive (and one of the six Republican challengers) Mike Templeman is catching flak for his previous Democratic contributions, which he described as “part of doing business.”

Meanwhile, Chandler spoke at the Fayette County Democratic Party Gala Dinner recently, and hit the right notes. He strongly appealed to the Women’s Network and to Lexington activists, and addressed his votes which many Democratic faithful strongly disagree with, and pointed out accomplishments in 2009 of the Congress. The speech didn’t make the disagreements go away, but it didn’t ignore them, and he emphasized his other more popular votes, and his need for support from all parts of the party.

No matter what Chandler does, he will not peel off many Republican faithful. But he doesn’t need to do that to be re-elected.

  1. What did the Womens Network think of his excuses for his anti abortion votes?

What about his anti health care reform votes?

  2. I’m off work today, so I can catch comments. They clearly disagreed with him, as you would expect.

And I didn’t get a chance to meet them, but there was someone with the last name Schankula at the dinner. Wish I could have caught up with them and said hello.

  3. There is no reason in the world for the NRCC to invest resources in the KY-6 race. Chandler is as republican as they come. There are those who thought Arlen Specter was a spectator, but Chandler is more of a spector – if he were to bolt to the republican caucus, a la sessions, shelby or gramm, I doubt Pelosi would miss him. He’s like Conway, or Blanche Lincoln – republican lite.
