Happy Furlough Day—the first of six. Fayette County PVA David O’Neill is going to give it his best shot today at going it alone. While even if staffers wanted to volunteer to keep the office open, because their checks are paid by the state, they are by regulation prohibited from doing so. But O’Neill is paid by the county, and will therefore be at the receptionist’s desk as the elevator doors open all day today. Hope he packed a lunch! From WKYT:
Fayette County’s Property Valuation Administrator is preparing for a Friday without a staff. His 25 employees are paid by the state and they are required to take Friday as a furlough day, but David O’Neill’s check comes from the county.
“Taxpayers are paying my salary. My salary’s gonna be the same whether the office is open or closed, so the fair thing to do for them is for me to be here,” says Fayette Co. PVA David O’Neill.
O’Neill expects to help about a dozen people coming into the office and to answer about 150 phone calls.
“Obviously some will have to roll into voice mail and I’ll return the calls as quickly as I can,” says O’Neill.
…
“I’ll be answering the phone when it rings and you can come right into the office, get off the elevator right there I’ll be sitting at this desk right here,” O’Neill said.
