A Church Trapped 70 Years in the Past In Bigotry

Duly noted—the head pastor opposed it. But in Pike County, a lifelong member of a church who wanted to be married in her church was refused. The reason? Because her fiancee was an African American, and she was white.

Presumably, Rand Paul was be cheering at this bigotry and discrimination and lifting it up as a great example of liberty in America.

Child Protection Records Ordered Released

There has always been a tension between the confidentiality requirements of for CHFS juvenile records and the need for public accountability to insure the protection function is properly served. Yesterday, some of that tension was addressed:

After multiple lawsuits and repeated calls for more transparency, Gov. Steve Beshear announced Tuesday that the state will release records of children who have been killed or nearly killed as a result of abuse or neglect.
At a Capitol news conference, Beshear announced that he also will introduce legislation in the upcoming session that would create an independent review panel to look at child fatalities and near fatalities and will propose legislation that would make it mandatory for the state to release records of such deaths.
In addition, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services will conduct a thorough review of the child-protection system and make changes if necessary, he said.

Inaugural Plans Announced

Slow on postings lately because it’s seemed fairly slow on news. Still no definitive word on how long Republican obstructionist David Williams will survive, and all the past governors have been named as honorary co-chairs of the inauguration day plans for Governor Beshear’s second administration.

Trey Grayson Introduces Newt Gingrich, Who Gets Mic-Checked by the 99 %

On Saturday, the defender of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and anyone else with the bucks to pay him, Newt Gingrich, made an unusually passionate and salty attack on the 99 percent he is paid to lobby against, as Huffingtonpost noted:

“All the Occupy movement starts with the premise that we all owe them everything,” Gingrich said at the Thanksgiving Family Forum in Iowa, as noted by Igor Volsky at ThinkProgress. “They take over a public park they didn’t pay for, to go nearby to use bathrooms they didn’t pay for, to beg for food from places they don’t want to pay for, to obstruct those who are going to work to pay the taxes to sustain the bathrooms and to sustain the park, so they can self-righteously explain they are the paragons of virtue to which we owe everything.”
“That is a pretty good symptom of how much the left has collapsed as a moral system in this country, and why you need to reassert something by saying to them, ‘Go get a job right after you take a bath,’” continued Gingrich, to loud applause from the audience.
The Thanksgiving Family Forum, which was one more opportunity to hear from the GOP presidential candidates, was sponsored by the Family Leader, a group headed by controversial social conservative Bob Vander Plaats.
Vander Plaats and his group have claimed that homosexuality is a public health risk and suggested that children born into slavery were better off than those living in an America with Barack Obama as president.

So why on earth would Newt get so suddenly passionate?

Simple—because he got punked up in Boston the night before by the 99 %. Turns out, the dirty Newt was trying to use a microphone that he didn’t pay for, to reach an audience in a hall that he didn’t pay for, to seek self-promotion. Sounds remarkably like the exact thing he was accusing the 99 % of, right?

So, watch (starting at about the 3:40 mark) what happens after Newt is introduced by Kentucky’s own Trey Grayson. When the Newt is shouted off the stage one night, little wonder that he would be attacking the 99 % the following evening.

Lexington Council Bows to Business, Caves on Noise

After three years, the businesses of Lexington demanded a get out of jail free card. If their property is zoned for business, then they should be allowed unlimited noise if it is related to that zoning, regardless of whether the neighboring residential properties are rendered useless by their owners. That’s why a noise ordinance amendment of three years of incredible effort and thoughtfulness was crushingly swept aside today by the business owners and the council members they controlled.

The Lexington Fayette Urban County Council is owned by business and development. Their pattern of purchases (campaign contributions) over the decades amounts to nothing less than absolute ownership. Even supposedly liberal council members are nothing more than their property.

Curtains for Blackjack?

Republican (and independent) commentators and consultants are freely saying David Williams is done. First it was Mitch McConnell’s BFF John David Dyche, saying the election was the end of the David Williams era.

Then, Al Cross, who, while independent, has strong ties within the Republican Kentucky community, reported on that controversy and tied it to yet another bad omen for Blackjack Williams:

That morning, many eyebrows had been raised when The Courier-Journal reported that Sen. Tom Jensen, R-London, wouldn’t say if he thought the election was a reason to consider replacing Williams: “I want to talk to him before I express any opinions on that.”

Then, this from cn2, from Republican Louisville consultant Ted Jackson, who said:

“This is politics. It’s indicative of what politics is. When someone stumbles, someone moves in to fill the void. We’re not talking about David right now. We’re talking about a guy who was bludgeoned in this race,” Jackson said at 4:15 of the video. “… In a broad sense, I still believe something will happen — some attempt to take David out or force him to leave, I think is inevitable.
No matter what, Williams will have to walk a fine line during the 2012 session while leading the Republicans in opposition to proposals by Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear, who defeated Williams last week.
“As a practical matter, how does he challenge Beshear and not look like sour grapes? If he capitulates, then he’ll look weak. It’s a very difficult challenge David faces,” Jackson said just before the 1 minute mark of the interview, which originally aired in Friday’s Pure Politics.
“In a lot of ways, David’s authority is gone … His authority in a lot of ways in the caucus is either diminished or gone,” he added.

The only mystery left is when. Any predictions on the timing? And will Williams’ casino friends give him a job at the front door, sort of like the Wal-Mart greeters?

Watching for Fallout from 2011, Redrawing Districts for 2012

In Lexington council districts and across the state, elected districts are being redrawn. What newcomers to legislative office will be redrawn within an inch of their life? Who will step up for Lexington’s 2nd District council spot, now that Tom Blues has announced he will not seek re-election?

Will Pike County Magistrate and rising star Chris Harris seek a state representative position, or mount a challenge for the state senate?

And most incredibly, will former Bully from Burkesville David Williams be made the Cupcake from Cumberland?

When even conservative lapdog John David Dyche calls for David Williams to step down as Senate President, how long will he last? A week? A month? As firmly in lockstep with Mitch McConnell as Dyche is, it is difficult to imagine Dyche didn’t get his marching orders from no-lips Mitch.
